What You Need to Know About Drainage Fields

Also known as leach fields, these systems are an underground perforated pipe network that collects effluent from septic tanks and wastewater treatment plants and allows it to percolate through the soil, which naturally filters out contaminants and pathogens.

Assessing Soil Suitability

We conduct percolation tests in accordance with British Standards, which involve excavating pits and allowing them to soak overnight before the formal testing begins. Failure to perform the overnight soakage will render the test non-compliant.

Compliance & Standards

With a team of SSSTS-qualified in-house engineers, we install drainage fields in compliance with approved designs and Building Regulations Part H to ensure regulatory approval. Additionally, our ongoing support will ensure your system performs effectively over the long term.

All our solutions strictly adhere to BS 6297:2007+A1:2008 and Environment Agency guidelines, which provide the code of practice for the design and installation of a drainage field used in wastewater treatment.

The Design Process

A poorly designed system will quickly fail and lead to problems such as pollution, surcharged pipework, frequent desludging, waterlogged ground and possibly legal issues.

Using the percolation values, we can determine the required drainage area according to the number of occupants or bedrooms in the property, combined with the soil’s porosity results. These factors, along with the field layout, trench lengths, invert levels, and construction specifications, guide the design process.
