What You Need to Know About Wastewater Pump Stations
A pump station, sometimes referred to as a sewage pumping station or lifting station, is used where gravity drainage alone cannot convey foul or surface water to its destination. It typically consists of a sealed wet well chamber that collects incoming flows, one or more submersible pumps, a pressurised rising main and a control panel that automatically manages the system's operation.

How do Pump Stations Work?

The most common setup for domestic and small commercial installations is a dual-pump arrangement operating on either a duty/standby or duty/assist basis. In duty/standby mode, one pump manages normal flows while the second remains on standby, automatically activating if the duty pump fails or is taken offline for maintenance. In a duty/assist configuration, both pumps operate during peak-flow events to provide additional capacity.

Controlled by float switches or ultrasonic level sensors within the wet well, with high-level and high-high-level alarms providing warning of potential overflow; the correct float level setting, including stop, start, assist trigger, and alarm levels is essential for reliable operation and to maintain adequate emergency storage capacity.

On longer rising mains or where anaerobic conditions develop, hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) can cause odour issues, corrosion and health and safety risks. These are typically managed using chemical dosing systems installed on the rising main, with dosing rates adjusted according to flow and retention time and monitored through the site telemetry system.

Expert Solutions

From initial investigation and design to installation and ongoing management, we handle every aspect of the project to ensure a reliable and efficient build. With years’ experience in wastewater management, we guarantee options that meet regulatory standards and ensure seamless operation. They are an efficient solution for transporting wastewater to the septic tank, drainage mound, treatment plant, or public sewer.

Routine Maintenance

Annual maintenance is essential for reviewing run-time data, identifying pump wear trends and scheduling proactive pump replacement before failure occurs. It includes inspecting and testing float switches and level sensors, verifying duty/assist logic, checking pump impellers, wear rings, seal integrity, check and isolation valves and calibrating the control panel and telemetry.

Keeping your wastewater pump station operating efficiently significantly reduces the risk of a pollution incident.

Advanced Telemetry

Designed to provide remote monitoring, these systems allow engineers to identify developing faults, assess wet well behaviour and respond to alarms without a site visit. Typically offered as an add-on feature, they are required under the Sewerage Sector Guidance (Water UK, 2020) for stations subject to adoption by a sewerage undertaker. They transmit real-time data including mains power status, pump operation, wet well levels, pump faults and high-level alarms to a remote monitoring platform. Where chemical dosing is integrated, the system also monitors dosing pump status and chemical levels.

Emergency Breakdown Response

Pump maintenance should always include a clear plan for system failure. Whether caused by an electrical fault, mechanical failure, wet well or rising main blockage, or control panel malfunction, failures can quickly lead to uncontrolled discharge. Our emergency callout service provides a rapid engineer attendance to diagnose faults and carry out temporary or permanent repairs to restore operation. Following every breakdown, we provide a detailed report including evidential photos, completed remedial works and recommendations for any further action.
